I was on the phone with a client in London today and I was baffled by his positivity and optimism. Yes, it’s going to be tough for weeks, probably months ahead but the world still needs to function, and we are all playing our part in it.
This particular client is a Michelin star restaurant and they are putting in place a takeaway service to deliver meals to the ones that need it. Money is not the driver but, helping the ones who are in need, keeping the staff morale up, giving a purpose to the team, making a difference and making a positive impact.
After talking to this client, I then called a friend, Fabien who is in London and runs a successful hospitality recruitment company. I needed to share my worries about the future of our industry and discuss the way forward. Like me, his business has gone to a near full stop. he told me, “Richard, there is no need worrying about what you cannot control, think about what you can control, like helping others, your neighbors, community, a family member that might need that little extra help, we are in this together and need to help each others”
The entire world is in a state of shock, we are scared for our future, our businesses, our loved ones. We are confused, angry, sad. We do not even know how we feel sometimes, it’s all so sudden, unreal. Nothing on this scale has ever happened before and the lack of understanding of this Covid19 virus behavior is frightening but we can’t let this beat us.
Fabien is right, we need to stick together more than ever, support each other, be kind to one another. we need to keep talking to each other, pick each other’s brains and move forward together. Together is the only way we will beat this. The virus is the main problem today but it will bring many other problems that can be beaten together.
Today I spent most of the day on the phone, talking to candidates, listening to their worry, offering moral support whenever I could. Tomorrow I will check with my elderly neighbors if I can offer any help, plan a shopping trip for them, etc. And I will be speaking to more clients and candidates. I might even be speaking to you..
I might not change the effect the virus has on the world but I can control how I react to it and I might not have control of my business anymore but I have control of my daily activities and how I choose to deal with it. Helping others seemed to give me back a sense of control and for a moment I felt like I GOT THIS! and I did!
Have you come up with creative ideas to keep the business going? put in place something for the community? have you had an inspiring discussion that helped you be more positive?
I am really keen to hear your stories, leave them in a comment for all to read.
Until then, feel free to reach out if you feel I can help you in any way.
Remember, You got this!
